Preparedness Kit

Winter storms can cause a number of hazardous conditions, such as freezing rain, high winds and snow. Any of these conditions or a combination of these can severely impact your local community. To stay safe during a winter storm or blizzard, it’s crucial to have an emergency kit in your household.

Creating a Winter Storm Preparedness Kit

Blizzards and winter storms can knock out power for several days. A winter storm kit with essential supplies can keep you and your loved ones safe during dangerous weather conditions. A pre-built emergency kit is option for those that are worried purchasing substandard supplies. However, if you want build your own winter storm kit, you will have to determine how many people you are preparing for. After that number is determined, you will need to collect the supplies and gear below

  • Backpack or Toolbox – Choose a sturdy backpack or toolkit to house all of your supplies. We prefer a backpack because it is easier to carry and it distributes weight evenly.
  • Water and Food – Make sure you have 72 hours’ worth of food and water. Stock one gallon of water person per day. All food items should be non-perishable. We recommend stocking your winter storm preparedness kit with Mountain House® Food Servings, Datrex® and a Sawyer® Water Filtration system
  • Ferrocerium Rod and Tinder – Keep these items in your kit in case the power goes out. Starting a fire is easy with a ferrocerium rod and tinder.
  • Portable Stove – Warm up your food and water with a portable stove.
  • Lighting Solutions – We recommending keeping military grade light sticks, LED flashlights and lanterns in your winter storm kit. Use these items to light your home or for illumination when going outdoors.
  • Emergency Blankets – If a blizzard or winter storms knocks out your electricity, you’ll need to stay warm in your house.
  • Radio – Include a hand-crank or battery-operated radio in your kit. It will allow you keep up with the latest weather updates and road conditions.
  • Bath Wipes – When your water sources are limited, bath wipes will keep you clean.

  • Cell Phone Charger – It’s important to keep your phone charged during a winter storm. Keep either a solar-powered or hand-crank cell phone charger in your emergency kit.
  • Utensils and Dishes – Stash utensils and dishware in your kit to avoid eating with your hands.
